April 18th started as a temperate Sunday morning, with dark skies looming overhead. This was the day we would have our mini-sessions at the park–our (Portrait) Party For Layla.
Layla Grace Marsh was a sweet 2 year old girl that lost her battle with cancer in April 2010. Her story captured the hearts of people across the country.
How would we honor her memory? The plan was simple; ten boutique photographers across Houston provide affordable mini-sessions for children with 100% of session fee proceeds going towards the Layla Grace Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. Participants give a session fee “donation,” and receive a 20 minute photography session and an 8×10 print. Getting back while giving back–easy, right?
Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans. Rain started pouring down by noon that day and only a few photographers were able to shoot before the deluge. Luckily I was one of them, photographing almost all of the children on the schedule. And what little beauties they were! We had so much fun being silly and chasing each other around. Even the Channel 2 News crew came out to do a story on the event (gasp! I was so nervous!).
For those who were not able to be photographed, the rain-out date had been set for the following Sunday. It was a perfect day for Houston area photographers to shoot children in locations all over the city. Thanks in part to our excellent media coverage, the event was a huge success! Sadly I was not able to participate then.
But don’t worry, I’m hosting another date on Sunday, May 23rd. Yay! I’m am almost completely booked, so if you’d like to take part in an awesome opportunity to raise money for childhood cancer research, please click the banner below to get redirected to PartyforLayla.com to book your spot. Currently, there are no plans to make this a monthly event, but if we’re lucky, it might be a yearly thing. We’ll just have to see. So sign up and support the cause. Let’s party on!
(Psst, If you’re on Facebook and “like” the photos, tag yourself! You know you want to.)

Jayne, I cannot believe you got such a great shot of Luke. Did you airbrush the tears out? I cannot wait to see more! Great work.
